SafetiBase brings structured data with a common schema, allows data to be connected, and is simple to use. Learn more about how SafetiBase can help make construction safer.
The management of health and safety (H&S) information in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry is often unstructured, disconnected, and complicated. On some projects, the management of H&S information is still done using spreadsheets and transferred between parties via email.
Although this approach may work on some smaller projects, it certainly becomes difficult to remember who owns each risk and what they need to do to mitigate it on larger projects that could have hundreds of risks.
A large consortium of partners including 3D Repo, Atkins, Mott MacDonald, Laing O’Rourke, Costain, Bentley, HS2, Tideway, and others recognised this as being an issue on many of the projects they were involved with, and so came together to develop a solution that could be used on projects of any size.
The group successfully applied for funding from i3p and Innovate UK to develop what is now known today as ‘SafetiBase’; a cloud-based repository that uses existing best-of-breed solutions, including 3D Repo’s platform for Building Information Modelling (BIM) to improve risk management.
Designed for communicating, managing, and visualising Health and Safety risks, SafetiBase brings structured data with a common schema, allows data to be connected, and is simple to use. SafetiBase comprises a database of health, safety, design, and welfare issues linked to an online 3D or 4D repository of project data, which means users benefit from existing knowledge for similar projects, removing the need to reproduce this information each time. Not only does this have the potential to save a large amount of time for any project, but it also creates a much safer working environment for people based on-site by mitigating risks much earlier.
3D Repo users simply log in to their 3D Repo account and use the SafetiBase feature to drop pins directly in their 3D and 4D BIM models to highlight issues. Hazard details including location, description, mitigation strategy, and level of residual risk can all be marked up and stored within the federated model. This information should be updated throughout the project lifecycle to maintain a record of all recorded risks associated with the project.
If required to satisfy contractual requirements at any stage of the project, information collected and managed within 3D Repo SafetiBase can be exported as a PDF document, or via our API to BIM authoring software products and Microsoft products such as Sharepoint or Excel.
Simple to use
The 3D Repo SafetiBase product brings the process of CDM and Health and Safety risk information management and analysis into your web browser to enable real-time collaboration, more cost-effective risk mitigation and streamlined project delivery via a simple-to-use application. Users can interact with issues and risks in a Kanban-style interface, or directly in the 3D and 4D environments.
Heath and Safety risk management in the cloud
3D Repo’s SafetiBase sits in the cloud, which means anyone with a web browser and an internet connection can log in and start collaborating. So instead of architects, consultants, and contractors sharing massive files in a time-consuming manner, they can simply point their web browser to a unique URL for each project, model, or risk and start examining each in a virtual environment.
No desktop applications will need to be installed on any local hardware devices which allows all project stakeholders to remain connected, informed, and aware of the latest and most up-to-date information for each individual risk. Scenarios can be simulated before heading to the construction site so teams delivering the project can identify issues and potential hazards virtually in their web browser and plan for them in advance.
Standards compliance
The 3D Repo SafetiBase platform is based upon, and fully compliant with, PAS 1192-6: Specification for collaborative sharing and use of structured Health and Safety information using BIM. The PAS framework set out the requirements for achieving BIM Level 2 which the UK Government has already committed to complying with for all large-scale and public-sector construction contracts. Furthermore, this standard now forms part of the newly formed UK BIM Framework.
Faster risk mitigation and treatment suggestions
Not only do we improve efficiencies by enabling real-time risk mitigation collaboration which may otherwise be managed at set dates and times, but we can also provide further efficiencies in how risks are mitigated and prescribed specific treatments. Working alongside the Discovering Safety program, we bring their Construction Risk Libray to the industry through 3D Repo SafetiBase. This functionality presents industry-standard risk treatments suggestions based upon an individual risk categorization.
In addition, 3D Repo Safetibase administrators users can import and overlay any pre-existing risk suggestion databases to further enhance this functionality. Should a new risk treatment for a new type of risk be identified and added to the SafetiBase environment, this new treatment suggestion will be stored and made available for future projects so that treatment data becomes consistent and reusable.
Improved accountability
As 3D Repo SafetiBase is bringing the process of risk mitigation into a systemised environment, all activities, changes, or updates to individual risks are fully tracked and logged. Having the entire decision process and reasoning clearly recorded in an independent and verifiable cloud solution provides an extra layer of accountability and traceability should an accident happen. All of which are exportable at any time.
